BASIC FUNCTION: This position is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing activities on all types of freight and passenger cars; and painting and stenciling; rerailing cars and locomotives by use of blocking, cables and rerailers; coupling air hoses and testing air brakes. This position is also responsible for preparing necessary paperwork associated with car repairs. Must be able to perform work safely, efficiently and follow government and company rules and regulations in car shops, on line of road, and on another railroad property. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports To: Superintendent Car and Locomotive or appropriate designee Supervises: No direct reports ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Inspects and repairs freight car components for compliance with Association of American Railroads (AAR), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and company operating standards. Follows company and government safety procedures, uses common sense, takes necessary precautions (e.g., wearing/using protective clothes and equipment) and maintains an overall level of safety awareness when operating in the work environment. Performs maintenance activity, both scheduled and on request, conducting air brake tests, lubricating moving parts, cleaning components, painting, etc. Repairs or removes components and parts, such as safety appliances, wheels, couplers, draft gears, truck sides and bolsters, steel sections, ladders, flooring, etc. Prepares necessary forms and reports associated with car repair. Operates transport vehicles, cranes, locomotives, shop equipment, and company vehicles occasionally. Performs rerailing duties utilizing blocking, cables, rerailing frogs, and heavy equipment. Responsible for performing duties and working hours as scheduled, including overtime, holidays, nights, weekends and travel as necessary. Performs other essential and nonessential functions as assigned, including tasks normally assigned to other composite mechanics, such as machinist, electrician and laborer. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education, Licenses/Certifications and Work Experience High school graduate or equivalent required. Experience as a qualified Carman preferred. Must be a qualified welder or can qualify AWS15.1 (American Welding Society). Must possess a current and valid driver's license and be insurable under IAIS's commercial auto policy throughout IAIS employment. Prior experience and knowledge of transportation/train operations helpful. Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Mental Requirement Skill in the application of mechanical aptitude and understand and apply mechanical principles.Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Understand and provide written, graphic, and verbal communications (e.g., instructions, explanations, blueprints, etc.) and request clarification if needed.Ability to read, understand, and abide by the General Code of Operating Rules. Must be able to abide by Federal Railroad Administration and other rules and regulations as required by IAIS and the federal, state and local governments.Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, management, vendors, and contractors.Make effective decisions when in unfamiliar locations or when responding to changes, interruptions, and obstructions in work process.Assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems, and exercise independent judgement when making decisions. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Constant (67-100%) stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, eye hand coordination, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking and hearing. Frequent (34-66%) pushing, pulling, climbing up to 20 ft., balancing, overhead work, repetitive motion, and viewing close visual work and/or distances. Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional (10-33%) sitting, traveling and lifting up to 100 pounds. Must possess at least 20/40 in each eye with or without glasses. Contact lenses are not acceptable under company safety standards except for office work. An average hearing threshold (in the better ear) of 40 decibels at 500 HZ, 1000 HZ and 2000 HZ aided or unaided. Must be able to recognize and distinguish colors with no more than four (4) errors in a sixteen (16) plate isochromatic test. Equipment use, including, but are not limited to: Chisel, hammer, blocks, crane, pry bar, socket sets, chain hoist, impact wrench, drill, cutting and heating equipment, screwdriver, forklift, jacks, measuring devices, punches, sledge hammer, welding equipment, wrenches, motor vehicles and two-way radio. May be stressful at time due to interruptions and multiple job duties. WORKING CONDITIONS: The location of work performed (frequently out-of-doors) and the tools and material used in the surrounding workplace, expose the incumbent to the following conditions on a regular basis: Weather (including extreme cold and heat)Water (from snow, ice and cleaning operations)Oil, grease, battery acids, and other hazardous chemicalsNoise (from machinery)Fumes, odors, dusts, gasesMoving equipmentVibrationVarious heights The job requires the individual to follow standard safety procedures, be alert, and take necessary precautions (e.g., wearing/using protective clothes and equipment) to avoid possible injuries or health problems that may result from: batteries;malfunctioning electrical equipment;moving and rotating equipment (possibility of injury is increased during night-time conditions);working with soaps, caustic solutions, electrical cleaners, and fuel;long periods of continuous work time (e.g., multiple work shifts);low and high voltage equipment; andworking around other workers. 2018 HOURLY RATE: $20.39 - $25.49 The statements stated in this job description reflect the general duties as necessary to describe the basic function, essential job duties/responsibilities, job requirements, physical requirements and working conditions typically required, and should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of the job.
